This creature is the physical manifestation of a human being who has been spiritually and physically hollowed out by one of two things: the ultimate taboo of consuming human flesh, or an insatiable, corrosive greed. It’s a gaunt, skeletal parody of a man, cursed to grow even larger with each victim it devours, ensuring its hunger can never, ever be satisfied. That’s the real horror - not a beast hiding in the trees, but the ghost of a human consumed from the inside out.

To get to the truth, you have to follow the story back to its roots, long before the Hollywood monsters took over. The trail starts with the first-hand accounts of 17th-century missionaries, men who were terrified by what they heard whispered around campfires in the New World. From there, it spills into the official record, leading to shocking crimes and colonial courtrooms where men claimed possession by a cannibal spirit. The trail doesn’t go cold, either. It leads right up to today, with modern encounters suggesting that something is still walking out there in the world’s lonely places. This is the story of a spirit forged in the unforgiving cold, a creature that serves as a timeless warning against the hungriest parts of human nature.

The Spirit Takes a Name

Long before it was a B-movie monster, the Wendigo was a known entity. The name wasn’t just a spooky campfire story; it was a specific term for a specific threat, a reality for the Algonquian-speaking peoples. You can see variations of it - Windigo, Witiko, Wihtikōw - across a massive stretch of North America. They all pointed to the same thing, and the name’s deepest root traces back to the Proto-Algonquian word wi-nteko-wa, which means “owl.” Think about that. In their worldview, the owl was a creature of the night, a silent hunter, and a messenger of death. Calling something “The Owl’ wasn’t a cute nickname; it was a deadly serious classification.

The Wendigo crashes into the written historical record in the 17th century, and it does so through the reports of French Jesuit missionaries who were completely unprepared for what they were dealing with. These guys show up in what is now Quebec, expecting to deal with standard theological debates, and instead, they start hearing reports that make their blood run cold. The first official mention is from a priest named Paul Le Jeune in 1636, who writes about a woman warning him about a cannibalistic being that had torn through a neighboring tribe and was still out there.

Just a couple of decades later, the reports get even more graphic. An entry in the Jesuit Relations from 1661 describes an outbreak among several men, calling it an “ailment unknown to us” that made them “so ravenous for human flesh that they pounced upon women, children, and even upon men, like veritable werewolves.”

And of course, that’s exactly what they’d call it. What else could they do? These guys were operating with a pre-loaded software of demons, devils, and European monsters. They encountered this raw, terrifying North American phenomenon, and their brains immediately tried to file it under a familiar category. Calling the Wendigo a “werewolf” was the 17th-century equivalent of seeing a UFO and calling it a “chariot of the gods.” It was a profound misinterpretation, a clumsy attempt to label something that was far older and far stranger than their worldview could handle. This was the moment the Wendigo got its first bad translation, and it wouldn’t be its last.

Anatomy of a Nightmare: Physical Description & Characteristics

The first thing you have to do is burn the pop-culture image of the Wendigo out of your brain. Get rid of the deer skull, the antlers, the werewolf body - all of it. That’s a modern invention, a design that makes the creature more of an animal, and therefore, less scary. The accounts of the actual Wendigo describe something far more unsettling because it’s fundamentally horrifyingly human. It’s a bipedal, humanoid entity, a grotesque funhouse-mirror reflection of the person it used to be.

The reports consistently put this thing at a towering 15 feet tall. Forget any ideas of a muscle-bound behemoth, though; the Wendigo’s huge frame is a skeletal nightmare. It’s a walking paradox, simultaneously gigantic and pathologically emaciated. Its skin is a dead, ashen-gray color, stretched so tight over its bones that you can see every rib and joint jutting out sharply. Imagine the physical embodiment of starvation, just scaled up to the size of a monster truck. The whole form makes no physical sense, and that’s a key part of the horror.

The face is where the real nightmare fuel is. The eyes are pushed way back in their sockets, sometimes described as glowing with a malevolent light, like hot coals in the dark. But the mouth is the creature’s defining feature. Accounts describe jagged, yellow fangs, but its lips are shredded, bloody, or missing entirely. Why? Because it’s said to have chewed them off in its own ravenous, unending hunger. This isn’t a monster that was born this way; it’s a creature that is actively, perpetually mutilating itself out of sheer desperation. It’s often bald or has just a few patches of matted hair, and it gives off a sickening stench of decay and death - the smell of the grave clinging to something that refuses to stay in it.

And at its core, literally, is the source of its power and its curse. The Wendigo’s heart isn’t made of flesh and blood. It’s a solid shard of ice. This is the symbolic center of the creature - the complete and total loss of human warmth, empathy, and compassion, replaced by a frozen, predatory void. This is also its greatest vulnerability. According to the lore, the only way to permanently kill a Wendigo is to destroy this icy heart, either by shattering it into pieces or melting it with fire.

The Making of a Monster: Three Roads to Ruin

A Wendigo isn’t born, it’s made. And it’s not like in the movies where you get a tainted bite and turn during the next full moon. The process is a corruption from the inside out, a spiritual sickness that eventually consumes the body. From all the accounts, three main pathways can drag a person down this road, and only one of them starts with the act you’d expect.

The first and most obvious path is through cannibalism. This is the most direct route. A person, usually starving in the dead of winter, is forced to consume human flesh to survive. That first act is a tragedy, but it’s the second step that’s the damning one. The accounts make a critical distinction between someone who eats another person to stave off death and someone who develops a craving for it. It’s the difference between doing the unthinkable to live, and discovering you like the unthinkable. Once that line is crossed, once the desire for human flesh takes root, the transformation is already in motion.

The second road is, frankly, even more terrifying because it requires no physical act at all. A person can become a Wendigo through overwhelming greed alone. In a society built on communal cooperation and sharing to survive the brutal northern winters, an individual who hoarded food, acted out of pure self-interest, or was consumed by gluttony was seen as a threat to the entire group. This kind of profound selfishness was considered a form of spiritual cannibalism. The soul had already succumbed to the insatiable hunger that defines the creature. The physical change was just the final, outward symptom of a rot that had already taken hold deep inside.

The last path is the stuff of nightmares because it might not be your fault. You can become a Wendigo through straight-up spiritual possession. The accounts describe a Wendigo as a malevolent manitou—a non-human spirit—that can essentially hijack a person. This can happen in a few different ways. You could be cursed by a powerful shaman, get bitten by an existing Wendigo, or the spirit could even invade your body through a dream. It’s a hostile takeover. Your soul gets evicted, and this ancient, hungry thing moves in and starts driving your body like a stolen car.

A History of Encounters

Understanding the rules of how a Wendigo is made is one thing. Seeing it happen is something else entirely. The accounts of this entity aren’t confined to oral tradition or whispered warnings; there are specific moments in history where this phenomenon crashed into the documented, verifiable world, leaving a trail of bodies and forcing the outside world to take notice. These aren’t just spooky tales. These are historical events, documented in court records, police reports, and newspaper clippings, where real people were confronted with something they couldn’t explain, and the official explanation was often far stranger than anyone was prepared for.

Historical Cases (When the “Myth” Became Real)

Swift Runner (1879)

Our first case is probably the most infamous, and for good reason. It’s the foundational story that put the Wendigo on the map for the colonial authorities. The man at the center of it was a Plains Cree trapper named Swift Runner. This wasn’t some unknown outcast; Swift Runner was a well-known and respected figure in the territory that would eventually become Alberta, Canada. The guy was so experienced in the wilderness that he had previously worked as a guide for the North West Mounted Police. He was the last person you’d expect to lose his way.

In the winter of 1878, Swift Runner headed into the northern forests with his entire family: his wife, his six children, his mother, and his brother. When spring arrived, he walked out of the woods alone. His story to the authorities at the local settlement was that his family had tragically starved to death during the harsh winter. The only problem? Swift Runner himself looked suspiciously healthy.

The police were immediately skeptical and sent a party back to his winter camp to investigate. What they found was a scene of absolute horror. The campsite was littered with human bones that had been picked clean and showed obvious signs of butchery. To make things even more gruesome, they found a pot containing rendered human fat. His family hadn’t just starved; they had been systematically murdered and consumed.

But here’s the detail that blows the whole “survival” story out of the water. The investigation determined that his camp was located just 25 miles from a Hudson’s Bay Company supply post. For an expert trapper and guide like Swift Runner, a 25-mile trek, even in winter, would have been difficult but entirely manageable. He wasn’t starving; he had another option and chose not to take it. Survival was no longer the motive. Under questioning, Swift Runner’s story completely fell apart. He confessed to killing and eating his entire family. His reason? He claimed he had been possessed by a Wendigo spirit, which had overwhelmed him and driven him to commit the horrific acts. This was the moment the Wendigo stopped being a “story” for the Canadian government and became the motive in a capital murder trial.

Jack Fiddler, The Last Wendigo Hunter (1907)

If the authorities thought the Swift Runner case was the end of the story, they were dead wrong. It was just their introduction. The story of Jack Fiddler shows a completely different facet of the Wendigo phenomenon - not the possession, but the defense against it.

Jack Fiddler, whose Anishinaabe name was Zhauwuno-geezhigo-gaubow, was an ogimaa - a shaman and leader of the Sucker clan among the Anishinaabe people in northwestern Ontario. Fiddler was, for lack of a better term, a specialist. He was the guy you called when you had a Wendigo problem. Over his long life, he became renowned for his spiritual power and claimed to have successfully defeated at least fourteen of these entities.

Let’s be perfectly clear about what that means. In his cultural context, Fiddler wasn’t a murderer; he was a spiritual surgeon performing a necessary procedure. He was typically called in by the family of a person who was believed to be in the final, horrifying stages of transforming into a Wendigo. The act was a form of mercy killing, performed with specific rituals to prevent the person from becoming a cannibalistic monster and, crucially, to ensure their spirit could move on peacefully. In some cases, the afflicted person, knowing what was happening to them, would ask for it themselves. This was a deeply serious and sacred duty, something Fiddler had even been forced to help with for his own brother, who had turned Wendigo during a famine.

This is where the two worlds collide. In 1907, the Canadian government was aggressively trying to assert its authority over the Indigenous populations in the north. The North-West Mounted Police caught wind of this shaman who “killed” Wendigos, and they saw a chance to make a statement. They traveled to Fiddler’s community and arrested the elderly man and his brother for the murder of a woman.

The case became a national spectacle, with newspapers running sensational headlines about pagan superstitions and murder. For Fiddler, it was an impossible situation. An act of profound spiritual responsibility was being prosecuted as the most heinous crime in the Canadian legal system. I truly, for the life of me, cannot imagine the logic of the government in this situation. It’s like charging a bomb disposal expert with destruction of property. You’re completely and deliberately missing the entire point to enforce your own narrow view of the world.

Before he could be tried under a law that didn’t even have a word for what he did, the elderly Jack Fiddler escaped his guards, walked into the woods, and hanged himself. It was more than a tragedy; it was a message. The trial was never just about justice. It was an instrument of colonial policy, designed to criminalize Indigenous law and spiritual authority. By charging a respected shaman with murder for doing his job, the state made its position crystal clear: their law was absolute, and all other worldviews were irrelevant.

The Bete Grise Incident (1912)

This next case is a much quieter, and in some ways, more disturbing one that I dug out of the Michigan state archives. It takes place in the winter of 1912 in a tiny, isolated mining outpost called Bete Grise on the Keweenaw Peninsula. If you’ve never been to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in the dead of winter, let me paint you a picture: it’s beautiful, remote, and brutally, soul-crushingly isolating. It’s the perfect incubator for something to go horribly wrong.

That winter, reports started trickling out of the outpost about a strange “illness” sweeping through the community. The official report from the Michigan Department of Health, which sent a public health officer to investigate, is a masterpiece of clinical understatement. It describes an outbreak of “violent hysteria and cannibalistic ideation.” People were losing their minds, becoming violent, and, according to the report, were talking about eating each other.

The health officer shows up, expecting to deal with a medical issue - maybe a nutritional deficiency causing psychosis, or just a severe case of cabin fever spreading through an isolated population. But when he gets there and starts talking to the local Ojibwe community, they give him a diagnosis that isn’t in any of his medical textbooks. They were clear and unified in their assessment: the community wasn’t sick, it was afflicted. A Wendigo had settled in the area, and its presence was spreading like a contagion, infecting the minds of the most vulnerable.

The official report, of course, doesn’t conclude that a monster was on the loose. But it does document the community’s firm belief. The true horror in Bete Grise was the sense of a spreading social contagion, an invisible sickness that passed from one mind to the next. Was it just mass hysteria brought on by a grim winter, with the Wendigo being a convenient cultural label for the madness? Or was the “violent hysteria” just the medical term for a spiritual plague that the local Ojibwe knew exactly how to identify? The state of Michigan filed it away as a medical anomaly. The people who lived there knew it was a season of fear when a hungry spirit was walking among them.

Modern Encounters (Echoes in the Wilderness)

It’s easy to write off the historical accounts as products of their time - a combination of harsh conditions and “superstitious” beliefs. But the Wendigo didn’t just pack up and vanish when the calendar flipped to the 20th century. The encounters just changed. They became more scattered, more isolated, and in a world armed with science and skepticism, somehow even harder to believe. What happens when an ancient entity runs headlong into the modern world? You get a new set of files, just as disturbing as the old ones.

The Nelson House Story (1950s)

Our first modern case comes not from a police blotter or a frantic 911 call, but from a published collection of oral histories from the Nelson House Cree people in Manitoba. This account, recounted by an elder about his grandfather’s time in the 1950s, is a chilling reminder that the trial of Jack Fiddler didn’t end anything. It just made the old practices go deeper underground.

The story is stark and direct. Sometime in the 1950s, a man within the community began to show the signs. He started to “turn Wihtikōw.” The people around him, who still possessed the generational knowledge of what to look for, recognized the spiritual sickness for what it was. The transformation had begun.

There was no call to the authorities, no attempt to seek outside medical help. Why would they? The last time they tried to handle this their way, their spiritual leader was arrested for murder. Instead, the community elders took charge. They took the afflicted man out onto the vast expanse of a frozen lake, far from the community. The oral history doesn’t detail what happened out there on the ice. That part of the story is left unspoken, and the silence is more powerful than any graphic description.

This account is critical because it’s a direct link between the past and the present. It proves that the knowledge of the Wendigo - what it is, what it does to a person, and the grim duty required to stop it - survived well into the modern era. This wasn’t a story being told about the distant past. This was an active, living protocol for a threat the community still believed was very, very real.

The Kenora Woods Stalker (1998)

Fast forward a few decades to 1998, near Kenora, Ontario. The world is a completely different place. We’ve got the internet, cell phones are becoming a thing, and The X-Files is on TV, making everyone an amateur paranormal investigator. In this new landscape, the Wendigo makes an appearance, but this time it’s not being handled by community elders. It’s being documented in a case file.

Throughout 1998, a series of disturbing reports began to surface from the woods around Kenora. Multiple, unrelated people started reporting encounters with the same thing: a tall, impossibly thin, emaciated figure seen moving through the trees. The descriptions were consistent - it was humanoid but unnaturally gaunt, and it moved with a predatory silence that deeply unsettled anyone who saw it.

These weren’t just stories that evaporated into thin air. They were collected and investigated by the North American Cryptozoological Society (NACS), who compiled them into a single file designated Case File #78, The “Kenora Woods Stalker.” When the investigators synthesized the eyewitness data, they ran into a fascinating problem. The creature being described didn’t fit the profile of a Bigfoot, which would be bulky and ape-like. It wasn’t a Dogman or any other common cryptid.

Instead, when they laid out all the physical descriptions - towering height, skeletal frame, humanoid shape - they found a perfect, one-to-one match for a creature from the old Algonquian accounts. Even without the cultural context of possession or spiritual sickness, the raw physical description led these modern cryptozoologists to the same conclusion. They were investigating a Wendigo.

This case is a huge data point because it shows the Wendigo successfully making the jump from one world to another. It demonstrates that the entity’s physical profile is so distinct and consistent that even secular investigations, looking at it through the lens of cryptozoology, landed on the same ancient classification. The name, it turns out, is still the best fit for what people are seeing stalking the Canadian wilderness.

The Black Sturgeon River Hikers (2018)

The final report in our file brings us screaming into the present day. On October 22, 2018, the Thunder Bay Chronicle-Journal published a story about an encounter on a trail near the Black Sturgeon River in Ontario. The witnesses were two seasoned hikers who knew the area inside and out, which makes their report all the more credible.

They claimed that something shadowed them for hours - a tall, impossibly thin figure moving with an unnatural silence through the dense trees. Imagine the psychological weight of that, being stalked for miles, feeling a predatory focus on you instead of just catching a fleeting glimpse of something in the shadows. Their ordeal was so terrifying that they made a formal report to the Ontario Provincial Police. This immediately elevates the story, taking it from a campfire tale to an official police matter.

The truly unsettling part is that the hikers apparently weren’t the only ones experiencing this. The newspaper article mentioned a recent “spike” in similar, unofficial reports from the same area, which basically means a wave of sightings was happening. The two hikers were simply the first to make it official.

You have to ask yourself, how is it possible in 2018? We live in an age of constant surveillance, where every other person has a 4K camera in their pocket. How can an entity from these ancient accounts still be actively hunting people just outside a major city? The only conclusion you can draw is that the Wendigo, whatever it is, is still out there. It’s operating in the margins just as effectively as it did three hundred years ago, completely unconcerned with our modern world.

Investigating the Mundane

Any good investigation requires you to play devil’s advocate. You have to look at the whole picture, and that means seriously considering the explanations that try to ground this thing in the boring, rational world. If you can’t argue against the skeptics, your own case is weak. There are a couple of mainstream theories that attempt to explain the Wendigo, and honestly, they’re pretty compelling.

Hypothesis 1 - The Disease of Starvation

The first explanation is a two-pronged attack: disease and misidentification. Let’s start with the creature itself. What if the tall, hairless humanoid seen stalking the woods is actually just a black bear with a severe case of sarcoptic mange? It’s a horrifying skin disease caused by parasitic mites that makes an animal lose its fur, leaving its skin gray and leathery. The animal becomes emaciated, its bones jut out, and it often becomes unnaturally aggressive out of sheer desperation. A sick, starving, seven-foot bear, walking on its hind legs at a distance, could absolutely be mistaken for a monster.

For the human side of the question - the people who claimed to be transforming - science points to the neurological effects of starvation. Severe deficiencies in micronutrients like vitamin B12 are known to trigger psychosis, paranoia, violent aggression, and delusions. It’s a perfect storm: the extreme psychological stress of winter isolation combined with a physical breakdown in brain function could absolutely make someone believe they were turning into a monster.

Hypothesis 2 - The Social Corrective

The second major theory is more anthropological. This argument states that the Wendigo was never a literal creature, but a social control mechanism. In a community where survival depended on cooperation, an individual who was dangerously selfish, greedy, or violent posed an existential threat. Labeling that person a “Wendigo” was a culturally sanctioned way to justify their ostracism or, in extreme cases, their execution for the preservation of the group. It’s a brilliant and chillingly practical explanation. It reframes the whole phenomenon as a tool for social justice, not a supernatural event.

These are smart, solid arguments, and they probably do explain away some of the historical accounts. The social control theory is an elegant way to interpret cases like Jack Fiddler’s. The problem is, these explanations don’t have the reach to cover everything. A sick bear doesn’t account for reports of a 15-foot-tall creature, nor does it explain the prolonged, intelligent stalking described by modern hikers. A 19th-century social label has a hard time explaining what witnesses in Kenora and Thunder Bay are still reporting today.

These rational explanations can chip away at the edges of the phenomenon, but they don’t seem to land a killing blow on the core mystery. There are still too many accounts, both old and new, that just don’t fit.

A Hunger That Never Fades

After digging through the historical records, the court documents, and the modern eyewitness reports, you’re left with a deeply unsettling picture. The Wendigo has proven to be incredibly persistent. It stared back at 17th-century missionaries who tried to fit it into their demonic beastiary. It became the central figure in colonial courtrooms, where men like Swift Runner and Jack Fiddler were put on trial, forcing the legal system to grapple with a spiritual reality it refused to acknowledge. And it continues to stalk the edges of the modern world, its gaunt profile seen by hikers and documented by cryptozoologists.

Throughout all of this, the creature’s core identity has remained brutally consistent. The authentic Wendigo isn’t a monster of the wilderness, but a monster of humanity. Its true terror comes from the fact that it’s a fallen human, a walking symbol of what happens when hunger-for flesh, for power, for more of everything-is allowed to consume the soul. The Algonquian peoples knew this; their accounts were a powerful warning against the corrosive nature of greed in a world where community was the only thing standing between you and a brutal death.

That’s why the Wendigo endures. It’s an incredibly adaptable entity. In the modern era, Indigenous activists and writers have powerfully re-appropriated the figure as a metaphor for the insatiable, cannibalistic nature of colonialism and unchecked capitalism. Whether it’s a spirit of the frozen forest or a symbol of systemic greed, the Wendigo represents a hunger that can never be satisfied. And that is a threat that will never go out of style.

It seems the ghost everyone thinks they know is just one piece of a much larger, more complex puzzle.

The Legend & Lore: The Tale of Endless Tears

Before we delve into the deep historical currents, we must start with the story itself. It’s a powerful narrative, and its core elements are remarkably consistent wherever it’s told.

The tale usually begins with a woman named Maria, who was said to be exceptionally beautiful but came from a humble background. Her pride, however, was anything but humble. Her beauty eventually attracted a man of a much higher social and racial class - often a wealthy Spanish nobleman or a rich ranchero. They began a passionate affair, and she bore him two sons.

For a time, they were happy. However, eventually, the man’s obligations to his status prevailed. He abandoned Maria and their children, planning to marry a woman from his own elite social circle. His old family was now just an inconvenient secret.

Blinded by a furious, all-consuming rage, Maria took her children to the river and, in a single, horrific act, she drowned them. The moment the deed was done, the rage vanished, replaced by an overwhelming guilt that shattered her sanity. She died on that same riverbank, and her spirit was stained by her crime. Denied peace, she was cursed to wander the waterways for eternity, trapped between this world and the next. Her entire existence is now defined by her grief and her ceaseless, wailing search for the children whose lives she took. This is the source of her iconic cry, “¡Ay, mis hijos!” (“Oh, my children!”).

And the legend doesn’t end with her suffering. It’s a cautionary tale because, in her madness, the Weeping Woman is said to snatch living children who wander too close to the water, tragically mistaking them for her own lost sons.

Historical Context: A Ghost Forged in Trauma

To find the origins of La Llorona, you have to dig. Way back. Before the Spanish, before the ghost story, and into the very cosmology of the Aztec Empire.

This is where the historical figure of La Malinche (also known as Malintzin or Doña Marina) enters the picture. A Nahua woman, she served as Hernán Cortés’s interpreter, advisor, and concubine, and she bore his son. She is one of the most ambivalent figures in Mexican history - seen by many as both the symbolic mother of the new mixed-race (mestizo) people and a traitor who helped bring about the ruin of her own. The legend of La Llorona became fused with her story. In this powerful interpretation, the Weeping Woman is the indigenous mother betrayed by her Spanish lover (Cortés), left to weep for her mestizo children, who were now caught between two worlds, dispossessed of their heritage.

This society was built on a racial caste system, or limpia de sangre (“cleanliness of blood”), that prized European heritage above all else. The common narrative of the legend—a poor indigenous or mestiza woman abandoned by a wealthy white Spaniard—is a direct reflection of the stark power imbalances of this era.

This historical context provides a chillingly plausible, non-supernatural basis for the legend’s core tragedy. Historians note that as more Spanish women arrived in the colonies, the status of the indigenous and mestiza women who had first formed unions with Spanish men declined sharply. It became a common practice for the mestizo children of these unions to be taken from their indigenous mothers to be raised as “Spanish,” effectively severing them from their maternal culture. This real-world history of forced dispossession provides a concrete foundation for the story of a mother’s unending grief. The legend thus evolved into a powerful cautionary tale, warning of the fatal dangers of transgressing the rigid racial and class boundaries of colonial society.

Eyewitness Accounts: Echoes Across Centuries

The history gives the legend its weight, but the ghost story lives and breathes through the people who claim to have witnessed her. From 16th-century omens to 21st-century Reddit posts, the volume and consistency of the accounts are staggering. When you start to synthesize them, a chillingly consistent profile of the Weeping Woman begins to emerge.

The first “official” account of a wailing woman dates back to the years just before the Spanish conquest (c. 1509-1519). Recorded in the Florentine Codex, it was described as the 6th great omen foretelling the Aztec empire’s doom: a woman was heard weeping and shouting in the streets of Tenochtitlán at night, crying, “Oh my children, we are about to go forever.”

From that primal scream, centuries of folklore have built a composite sketch of the entity.

They described it as sounding like a woman “screaming her guts out down a big hallway.” Another user from the El Paso area described seeing a “person but all white and kinda translucent” in an empty field behind their home late at night, noting that on some nights, the air feels “heavy” and even their dogs hurry back inside.

• San Antonio, Texas: The area around Woman Hollering Creek, just outside San Antonio, is a well-known hotspot for La Llorona activity. One particularly harrowing story posted on Reddit’s r/nosleep recounts a father and child’s “Llorona hunting” trip. The terrifying encounter involved a hand pressing against the car window and a voice repeating “Mi hija” (“My daughter”), followed by the sounds of someone trying to crawl through the broken window after the father fired his pistol in a panic.

• Quindio, Colombia: A recent story from 2025 on Reddit’s r/Ghoststories illustrates La Llorona’s adaptation to technology. A family living near a river reported hearing a soft, pained, human-like weeping. The true terror came when an ambulance arrived at their home at 1 AM, responding to a distress call that no one in the house had made. Local lore suggests that La Llorona has learned to use modern tools, such as phones, to lure people or gain entry to a home.

It’s a leading candidate for explaining many ghostly encounters. The mournful wail of La Llorona could be the mind’s interpretation of the natural sounds of wind howling through trees, the rustling of leaves, or the gurgling of river water. Similarly, a fleeting glimpse of a tall, white figure in the dark could be the brain imposing a human shape onto mist, a strangely shaped tree, or shifting shadows.

• Misidentification: In low-light conditions, it’s easy to misidentify known animals. The unsettling, mournful calls of certain nocturnal birds, like some species of owl, have been suggested as a possible source for the “wail.”

• Known Psychological States: Certain altered states of consciousness can produce vivid sensory experiences. These include hypnagogic and hypnopompic hallucinations - vivid, dream-like auditory or visual hallucinations that occur as a person is falling asleep or waking up. While science and psychology offer plausible alternatives, they don’t entirely silence the woman who weeps by the water. The question of what, precisely, people are experiencing remains stubbornly, fascinatingly open.

The Weeping Never Stops

So where does that leave us? We started with a wail in the dark and ended up deep in the history of a continent. We’ve seen how the Weeping Woman is far more than a simple ghost. She is a figure of incredible complexity, a story that has been shaped and reshaped over the past 500 years.

She began as a goddess, Cihaucoatl, and omen of collective doom for the Aztec people. In the fires of the Spanish Conquest, her story was forged with the trauma of a nation and the identity of La Malinche, becoming a potent allegory for betrayal and cultural loss. In the centuries that followed, she became the tragic ghost we know today, a cautionary tale built on the very real social injustices of the colonial era. And today, she continues to evolve. For some, she is a symbol of feminist rage and social protest against modern violence, for others, she remains a terrifyingly real presence, an active phenomenon with new encounters being reported in our own time.

It was at this point when I noticed that I could not drage my eyes away from theirs. I felt as though I was being sucked in. It felt horrendous as though my life were being dragged from my body, screaming.

The story of the Ursuline nuns is an integral part of the Casket Girls narrative. These nuns provided guidance, education, and stability during a time when New Orleans was still finding its footing as a new colony. Their convent was not only a place of worship but also a beacon of learning, a symbol of hope, and a testament to the strength of these women who braved the unknown to build a better future.

Separating Fact from Fiction: The True Story Behind the Casket Girls

As we’ve journeyed through the legends, myths, and historical accounts surrounding the Casket Girls, it’s time to set the record straight and connect the dots between what’s fact and what’s been sensationalized over the centuries.

The Arrival of the Casket Girls: Facts vs. Fiction

The Casket Girls arrived in Biloxi in 1721, six years before the Ursuline nuns reached New Orleans. Contrary to popular belief, the two stories did not connect as the legend suggests. By the time the Ursuline Convent was established in 1752—three decades after the Casket Girls had settled into their married lives—the girls were already well-established in Louisiana society. Although the convent is often rumored to have been the girls’ home, it didn’t exist when they arrived, making that part of the story purely fictional.

Nevertheless, one rumor does contain some truth. New Orleans was a refuge for criminals, vagrants, and outcasts, serving as a makeshift penal colony for France in the 18th century. While the city’s early days were steeped in crime and chaos, this aspect of its origins is a tale for another time.

The “Caskets” That Weren’t Coffins

Now, let’s clarify the confusion surrounding the “caskets.” Contrary to some legends, the Casket Girls weren’t hauling around coffin-like trunks. Here, “casket” or “cassette” refers to a small trunk or suitcase for carrying their belongings. Over the years, the term “casket” evolved, and by the 19th century, it had begun to denote a coffin in certain areas—especially in the United States. However, the girls’ “caskets” resembled travel bags, far removed from the macabre image of coffins. So, let’s put that myth to rest once and for all: the Casket Girls didn’t carry coffins with them.

Illness & the Challenges of Colonial Life

The Casket Girls’ journey across the Atlantic and their settlement in Louisiana were filled with hardships, but the illnesses they encountered weren’t unusual for the era. Due to its swampy terrain, subtropical climate, and inadequate nutrition, New Orleans served as a breeding ground for disease. This was a harsh reality of the colonial period, where sickness often accompanied any transatlantic voyage. The rumors of illness spreading among the Casket Girls are rooted in historical fact, although they weren’t confined to their group alone. Illness was simply a part of life in a city still trying to navigate its challenging environment.

The Mystery of the Ursuline Convent’s Attic Shutters

The Ursuline Convent, built long after the arrival of the Casket Girls, carries its own set of eerie legends. The attic shutters, in particular, have been the focus of much speculation. Unlike most historic buildings that allow attic windows to remain open for ventilation, the Ursuline Convent’s shutters are securely sealed. Over the years, locals have reported strange occurrences: shutters mysteriously flung open during storms only to close quickly again, and ghostly faces appearing in the attic windows. Some visitors claim to have felt unseen eyes watching from above.

While these stories enhance the convent’s supernatural allure, the truth behind the sealed shutters remains a mystery. Whether it’s a matter of preservation or something more, the legend continues to captivate the imaginations of those who walk past the convent today.

Unraveling the Threads of History & Myth

The tale of the Casket Girls is an intriguing mix of fact, fiction, and folklore. While we’ve debunked some fantastical aspects, the legend endures, fueled by the city’s rich cultural history and deep connections to the supernatural. As we’ve uncovered the layers of this story, it’s evident that the truth behind the Casket Girls is just as captivating as the myths surrounding them. Ultimately, the legend of the Casket Girls reminds us how history and imagination often intertwine, creating narratives that last long after the facts have faded into the mists of time.

A Haunting Twist on the Legend: The Casket Girls Reimagined

If you’ve made it this far, congratulations! You’re in for an exclusive treat. As a reward for sticking with me through this journey, I’m unveiling Marita Cradle’s hauntingly reimagined version of the Casket Girls legend.

Now, sit back and let the eerie legend unfold…

The year was 1721, the time of New Orleans's infancy. A great need for marriageable women to help colonize Louisiana was burdening the governing forces. Thus, 24 young girls were selected from a hospital in France, la Salpêtrière, a boarding facility with a suspicious reputation. It was a home for orphans, prisoners, and the mentally insane. Between 14 and 17 years of age, the girls who were chosen had been raised, many of them from birth, in the walls of la Salpêtrière. While it was not at their discretion whether they would stay in France or embark on the journey to New Orleans, heading toward a questionable future, one might think the chance for any adventure out of the walls of la Salpêtrière would have been a welcome one.

Uncertain of their fate, the girls were put under the chaperonage of Sister Gertrude, also of la Salpêtrière. She was said to have ruled with an erratic nature. Her charge was to keep the girls safe on the ship and behind lock and key during evening hours, so they would not be deflowered. La Salpêtrière was a dark, gruesome place where historically, not just orphans, the mentally ill, and the insane were housed, but also diabolical creatures were rumored to have been held captive there when necessary. In addition to ensuring the Casket Girls had safe passage, the sister, a creature of sorts herself, was to dispose of, while at sea, a very dangerous passenger. The girls traveled with large trousseaus, also referred to as caskets at the time. Sister Gertrude traveled with a casket of her own, you see. It was the casket of one very dangerous vampire.

Bienville writes of a trick Sister Gertrude, the girls' chaperone, played during the voyage. The sister was clearly jealous of the young maidens and the attention they received, adored by all they met. The sister might have released that creature in the girls' locked chambers on one evening at sea. Perhaps the sister made a pact with the vampire, whom she was supposed to dispose of. It is rumored that one girl said just before she went dizzy at night that she had seen a small black cat in their chambers. Just thereafter, she was visited by a dark figure who seemed to entrance her, and then mysteriously, she went faint. The girls were all reported to be weak from poor nutrition, but their weakness have come from the first bite of the vampire? Perhaps night after night, they were being visited by the creature who was slowly turning these girls into prisoners of darkness at Sister Gertrude's direction.

Meanwhile, the girls were kept under lock and key at night. During the day, when others roamed on deck, the girls were now nowhere to be seen. However, the dark, sealed quarters of the ship certainly made it possible for nocturnal creatures to be quite safe during daylight hours. Many passengers were hit by illness during the journey, some actually dying. While not thought of as unusual at the time, many now question whether those passengers weren't fated at the hands of something sinister. Could they have been nourishment for the vampire and the maidens who were under its spell?

Sister Gertrude was chagrined as the girls seemed to become more and more beautiful during the voyage. Once they reached Louisiana, Sister Gertrude was the sole witness as each girl was quickly wed, all by night. However, she was then shipped immediately back to France, quite in her favor, as she avoided any consequences of her actions. It is said that there is no record of these girls ever having made it to New Orleans. However, over the years, there was much illness in the city of New Orleans during these times, and that is the primary reason the Ursulines were sent to the city. It is very likely that once the girls accepted their new existence, they made their way to this city known for its sinister side. It was perfect for a creature of the night. They could feast on the prisoners, prostitutes, and vagrants, as who would be missing them?

Sister Mary Hachard, the youngest of the Ursulines, wrote five long letters to her father during her travels to New Orleans, in one of which she makes a point of mentioning a small cat. She wrote, “We also took a pretty little cat that wanted to be a part of our community, taking for granted that it could find little mice and rats in Louisiana just as in France.”

Well, it is rumored that the king found out about Sister Gertrude’s shenanigans during the voyage to Louisiana and now feared for the safety of the people of Louisiana at the hands of the vampire maidens. However, it was agreed that it was no fault of the girls themselves what they had become, so the order was made that Sister Gertrude would sail with the Ursulines undercover. Sister Gertrude was never seen on the ship La Baleine; there was only a small pretty cat. Sister Gertrude had been given a little rope but had greatly taken advantage of the freedom the king afforded her. Now found out, perhaps her punishment was not to scurry for little mice and rats, but sent to the Ursulines in cat form, the sister was made to travel back to New Orleans and one by one, find and capture the Casket Girls. She was to bring them under the care of the nuns until the convent was built, and there they would be housed under lock and key for eternity, under Sister Gertrude’s eternal observation. It was, after all, at her hand that the horror of the girls’ fate had transpired.

The Casket Girls would indeed remain in the convent under Sister Gertrude’s perpetual patrol. However, the girls would also receive the care of the Ursulines. They would be educated, given love and spiritually nurtured to recapture whatever humanity they were capable of in their current situation. The nuns were driven to help women of all types and certainly those who had been the victims of a cruel, immoral, and immortal joke.

Once they arrived in New Orleans, the Ursulines were made privy to the vampire maidens. The girls were brought one by one to the house on Bienville Street. Sister Gertrude anxiously awaited the convent’s security and convenience to its hospital. She was currently forced to hunt daily around town, directing rats to the maidens to feast on for the blood that was necessary for their survival.

Finally, the time came in 1735 when the first convent was built. It was quite a predicament now to get the vampires from the house on Bienville Street to the convent without notice. It was decided that the cloistered nuns, rather than travel quickly in buggies to the convent with caskets in tow, would make a statement of their presence in New Orleans with a procession from the Bienville house to the convent. Their procession, with music and costumes, would drive attention away from the several caskets they traveled with behind the parade, concealed under a canopy.

The vampires were then held captive on the third floor and fed the blood of the ill, which worked for their circumstances. Later, when the convent was rebuilt in 1752, they were only afforded an attic. Some of them had attempted on more than one occasion to escape, so it was decided an attic could be kept more secure. In addition, a special room was built, for the protection of the nuns, where the vampires could be punished in seclusion when necessary, until they were once again brought to reason. It is said that occasionally, one of the girls would go mad to the cloister, which was their eternal prison. The nuns were then forced to secure the vampire in this room. It is the only room in the attic with a brick floor, and heavy chains are secured to the beams. There is a double door so that the nuns were not forced to enter the room but could simply toss rats in for the girls to feed on. There in the third-floor attic they stay under the protection of the church and the archdiocese.

Many say that when they wander past the convent at night, they feel eyes peering deep into their souls. These are the eyes of the maidens who were robbed of their humanity and then their freedom at the hands of one sour spinster, Sister Gertrude - centuries of anger, desire, confusion, and sadness held captive in one attic. A small cat is said to be seen now and then, roaming the convent grounds. Sister Gertrude’s curse remains as guardian of the Casket Girls.
