That’s when their headlights caught two huge, glowing red circles by the side of the road. According to the witnesses, the eyes were attached to a gray, muscular creature “shaped like a man, but bigger,” with ten-foot wings folded against its back. When they sped away, the creature reportedly pursued them, keeping pace with their car even as it topped 100 miles per hour.

Their terrified report to the Mason County Sheriff’s Department could have been an isolated incident, a strange footnote in a small town’s history. But it wasn’t. When the Point Pleasant Register published the story with the headline “Couples See Man-Sized Bird… Creature… Something,” it opened a floodgate. What had been whispered about was now out in the open, and others felt they could finally come forward. The phenomenon had a name, “Mothman,” and it was just getting started.

For the next thirteen months, Point Pleasant became a focal point for high strangeness. The Mothman was seen again, but the reports also expanded to include strange lights in the sky, bizarre electrical malfunctions, and unnerving visits from men in dark suits who questioned witnesses and then vanished. Then, on December 15, 1967, the Silver Bridge connecting Point Pleasant to Ohio collapsed into the river during rush-hour traffic, killing 46 people. In the tragedy’s aftermath, residents realized something deeply strange: the Mothman sightings had completely stopped.

The official cause of the Silver Bridge disaster is a matter of public record, a cold engineering fact. Yet, the timing remains a profound and deeply unsettling coincidence. The thirteen-month window of bizarre phenomena seems to open and close in perfect, terrible alignment with the town’s greatest tragedy. Unraveling what truly happened in the Ohio River Valley requires examining these two parallel histories - the story told by terrified eyewitnesses, and the one told by the fractured steel of the bridge. The Seminal Encounter: A Legend is Born in the TNT Area

Every investigation has a starting point —a single event that sets everything else in motion. For the Mothman, it was a late-night drive on November 15, 1966.

Two young married couples, Roger and Linda Scarberry and Steve and Mary Mallette, were in Roger’s 1957 Chevy, doing what kids in small towns do - cruising around with no particular place to go. Their route took them through the sprawling, dark expanse of the West Virginia Ordnance Works, the TNT Area. It was a popular spot for young people, a maze of overgrown roads, decaying concrete domes, and the skeletal remains of a WWII munitions factory. As they passed the derelict North Power Plant, their headlights swept across something that didn’t belong.

Standing by the roadside were two enormous, glowing red eyes. They were attached to a creature the four witnesses described as being “shaped like a man, but bigger,” somewhere between six-and-a-half and seven feet tall. It was gray, muscular, and had huge wings folded up against its back. Linda Scarberry would later report that the eyes were hypnotic,” a stare so intense it prevented her from making out any other details of its face, or if it even had one.

Panic set in. Roger Scarberry slammed his foot on the accelerator, peeling away down State Route 62 toward town. But the thing they saw wasn’t stationary. The creature unfolded its massive wings - with a span they estimated at ten feet - and took to the air, pursuing them. This is where the report goes from strange to utterly impossible. The witnesses claimed the creature easily kept pace with their car as it hit speeds over 100 mph. It wasn’t flapping wildly; it was gliding, effortlessly, its wings seemingly held rigid as it shadowed the Chevy down the highway. Mary Mallette recalled hearing a high-pitched squeaking sound from it, “like a big mouse.” The chase only ended when they reached the city limits of Point Pleasant, where the creature finally banked away and disappeared into the darkness.

Shaken and terrified, the four didn’t go home. They drove directly to the Mason County courthouse to find a police officer. There, they reported their encounter to Deputy Millard Halstead. Halstead knew the Scarberrys and Mallettes. He saw that they weren’t drunk, and he recognized the look of genuine fear in their eyes. He followed the couples back to the TNT Area to investigate the site of the encounter. They didn’t find the creature, but Halstead did notice something strange. As they got close to the old power plant, his police radio was suddenly overwhelmed by a loud, unexplainable static - a detail that, until then, had no connection to the winged thing they’d just seen.

Anatomy of a Nightmare: A Composite Profile of the Creature

The first story from the Scarberrys and Mallettes was the spark. But as more reports flooded in, the details began to form a pattern. Investigators and journalists who sifted through the accounts from those thirteen months started to see a creature that was described with remarkable consistency.

So, what did this thing look like?

Size & Build

Across the board, witnesses agreed on the basics. It had a humanoid shape, but it was massive. The most common description was straightforward: “shaped like a man, but bigger.” We’re talking six-and-a-half to seven feet tall. And powerful. Most accounts mentioned a broad, muscular build. The color was usually reported as a dull gray or brownish color. John Keel, after collecting over a hundred reports, noted that the consensus was clear: the creature was gray, and it appeared to be completely featherless.

Wings & Flight

And the wings… this is where the reports get really strange. Witnesses put their span at a massive ten feet. But it’s not the size that’s baffling; it’s how the creature used them. It didn’t seem to flap. The original witnesses were adamant that it kept up with their car at over 100 mph while just… gliding. Silently. Effortlessly. When it was on the ground, the wings were tucked tightly against its back. Other reports claimed it could shoot straight up into the air like a helicopter. These aren’t the characteristics of any known animal. The flight dynamics don’t make sense.

The Red Eyes

Every witness mentioned the eyes. They were its defining feature. They were consistently described as large, round, and intensely red. But they also glowed. Witnesses often compared their luminosity to “automobile reflectors” or “bicycle reflectors.” Some even reported that the eyes seemed to be set high in the creature’s chest, giving it a terrifying, “headless’ appearance. Linda Scarberry said they were “hypnotic,” an effect so powerful it kept her from seeing any other part of its face.

Associated Phenomena

The encounters weren’t always just visual. Sometimes, there was sound. Mary Mallette remembered hearing a high-pitched squeak during the chase, “like a big mouse.” And even stranger was the creature’s apparent effect on electronics. This became a recurring theme. Newell Partridge’s TV went haywire right before his sighting. Deputy Halstead’s police radio was hit with a powerful static near the TNT Area. It was as if the creature itself was emitting some kind of energy, a disruptive electromagnetic field that technology couldn’t handle.

The 13-Month Shadow: A Timeline of High Strangeness

The harrowing chase on Route 62 was the event that blew the story wide open, but it wasn’t the beginning. Not really. When you dig into the archives and local newspaper clippings, you find the strange encounters had already started. They were just whispers.

The Prelude

The first documented sighting happened three days earlier, on November 12, 1966, in a cemetery near Clendenin, West Virginia. Five men were digging a grave when they saw something that made them stop cold. A “brown human being” with wings lifted off from some nearby trees and flew low over their heads. They were unnerved but didn’t report it. Who would have believed them?

Then came the night of November 15, just hours before the Scarberrys and Mallettes had their famous encounter. A local contractor named Newell Partridge was at his home in Salem when his TV screen suddenly went dark and began to emit a loud, strange hum. His hunting dog, a German Shepherd named Bandit, started growling at the door. When Partirdge went outside with a flashlight, he caught the reflection of two large, red, circular lights in a nearby field. He said they looked just like “bicycle reflectors.” As Bandit charged into the darkness toward the eyes, Partridge heard a high-pitched sound, and his dog was gone. Bandit, a veteran hunting dog, was never seen again. Partridge’s account is critical. It’s the first time the glowing red eyes were linked to other phenomena: electronic interference and the mysterious disappearance of a pet.

The Media Frenzy

The private terror of a few witnesses became a public phenomenon on November 16, 1966. That’s when the Point Pleasant Register ran the story with the iconic, slightly clumsy headline: “Couples See Man-Sized Bird… Creature… Something.” That was the spark. The Associated Press immediately picked up the story and went national. The next day, Mary Hyre, a respected local journalist, published her own detailed account, cementing her role as a key chronicler of the events.

This media coverage created a crucial feedback loop. With the paper validating the initial report, the social barrier for other witnesses to come forward was suddenly lowered. And they did. Almost immediately.

That same night, November 16, a local woman named Marcella Bennett was visiting friends near the TNT Area with her infant daughter. She reported seeing a large, gray figure with glowing red eyes rise slowly from the ground behind her parked car. As they scrambled for the house, Bennett claimed she tripped and fell, and for a terrifying moment, the creature loomed over her before moving onto the porch to peer through a window. The name “Mothman” was coined soon after by a newspaper copy editor, likely inspired by a villain from the popular Batman TV series of the time. The name stuck. The legend was now in flight.

The Long Year

The initial flurry of sightings didn’t just fade away. Instead, they evolved into a sustained, 13-month period of unusual activity that settled over the entire region. The phenomenon also began to expand. It wasn’t just about seeing a creature anymore. The story became a cluster of what investigators called “high strangeness.”

Reports of UFOs and strange lights in the sky became commonplace, with many sightings concentrated over the TNT Area. Then came the visits. Several residents, including journalist Mary Hyre, reported being intimidated by strange men in black suits. These “Men in Black” allegedly asked probing questions about UFOs and the creature sightings. Their behavior was described as bizarre; they spoke in monotones and, in one account from Hyre, one of them never blinked during an entire interview.

A sense of foreboding began to grow in the community. Mary Hyre herself best expressed it. On November 19, 1967, nearly a year into the strange events, she contacted investigator John Keel. She told him about a terrifyingly vivid nightmare she’d had about seeing people drowning in the river amidst Christmas packages floating on the water. She told Keel, “It’s like something awful is going to happen.”

The Prophecy Fulfilled

The “something awful” arrived with shocking finality.

At around 5:00 PM on Friday, December 15, 1967, the Silver Bridge, a 39-year-old suspension bridge connecting Point Pleasant to Ohio, collapsed during heavy rush-hour traffic. The entire structure buckled and fell “like a deck of cards” in less than 20 seconds. Forty-six people lost their lives in the icy water below.

In the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, the Mothman sightings, the UFO reports, and all other strange phenomena that had plagued Point Pleasant for 13 months abruptly ceased. The silence was profound. It created a narrative vacuum that was quickly filled by a powerful and enduring explanation: the Mothman had been an omen. The entire year of terror was retroactively reinterpreted as a series of unheeded warnings leading up to the prophesied disaster.

The Case Against the Mothman

The strange reports from Point Pleasant stopped with the collapse of the Silver Bridge. That’s where the paranormal file seems to end. But it’s the exact moment another file begins - the official one. This is the story told not by terrified eyewitnesses, but by engineers in hard hats, by wildlife biologists with migration charts, and by psychologists who study how fear can take root in a community. Their version of events has no monsters or omens, but it’s a crucial part of the puzzle, and it leads to its own startling conclusions.

Hypothesis #1: An Ornithological Error

Could the Mothman have been just… a bird? It’s the first place any grounded investigation has to look. The idea is that in the darkness and panic, witnesses simply misidentified a large, perhaps unfamiliar, bird. There are two main suspects in this ornithological lineup.

First up: the Sandhill Crane. And it’s a monster of a bird. A Sandhill Crane can stand nearly as tall as a man and boasts a wingspan that can stretch over seven feet. More importantly, it has a patch of bright red, featherless skin right on its forehead. It’s easy to imagine how a car’s headlights hitting that patch could create the illusion of glowing red eyes. But there are problems with this theory. For one, West Virginia isn’t a primary migration route for these cranes. They’re not common in the area. And would every witness really fail to mention the crane’s long, obvious neck?

That brings us to suspect number two: a large owl, maybe a Barred or Great Horned Owl. This theory has a lot going for it. The “glowing red eyes” can be explained by a biological feature called the tapetum lucidum. It’s a reflective layer in the eyes of many nocturnal animals that causes a brilliant, often crimson, eyeshine when hit with a direct light source. An owl’s body shape also fits. With its large head blending right into its body, it could easily be perceived as a “headless” creature in a fleeting glimpse. And, of course, their flight is almost completely silent. The main issue is size. A Barred Owl is big, but it’s not seven feet tall. Skeptics argue that a frightened person in the dark is the world’s worst judge of size and distance. As a final, compelling piece of evidence, an unusually large Snowy Owl was actually shot and killed near Point Pleasant in 1966, proving that big, out-of-place owls were in the area at the time.

Hypothesis #2: The Psychology of a Stressed Community

What if the Mothman wasn’t a bird, but an idea? A shared anxiety that took physical form. The Point Pleasant of the mid-1960s was a community under serious strain. The coal industry was in decline, poverty was widespread, and a general sense of hopelessness pervaded much of Appalachia. On top of that, the entire country was gripped by the paranoia of the Cold War, a constant, low-level fear of hidden enemies and sudden disaster.

This created a perfect storm of social and psychological tension. All it needed was a spark.

That spark was the first newspaper article. A strange yet compelling story, legitimized by the local paper, provides people with a specific framework for their fears. Psychologists call it a collective delusion. A person sees a fleeting shadow in the woods. Normally, they’d dismiss it. But now, with the Mothman story fresh in their minds, their brain interprets that shadow differently. The human mind is built to see patterns - a phenomenon called pareidolia. It’s why we see shapes in the clouds. In an anxious town, people began to see a monster in the shadows. This creates a feedback loop. More sightings get reported, which makes the story seem more credible, which encourages even more people to interpret ambiguous events as a visit from the Mothman. The monster, in effect, becomes real because people start believing it is.

Hypothesis #3: The Forensic Reality of the Silver Bridge

The story of the Mothman is forever tied to the collapse of the Silver Bridge. This is what gives the creature its prophetic, mythic power. But the reason the bridge fell isn’t a mystery.

A multi-year investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) provided a definitive, scientific answer. It all came down to a single piece of steel out of thousands. A part called “eyebar 330.” A tiny stress crack, likely present since the bridge’s construction forty years earlier, had been growing microscopically over the decades. The fatal flaw was located deep inside a joint, completely hidden from view. It was impossible to detect with the technology of the day. On December 15, 1967, weighed down by rush-hour traffic, that tiny crack reached its breaking point. The eyebar failed, and a catastrophic chain reaction brought the entire bridge down in under 20 seconds.

This is the official story - a precise, factual account of metal fatigue, corrosion, and outdated engineering. It explains the how of the tragedy with cold, hard data. And yet, for many, it doesn’t close the case. The forensic report is silent on the thirteen months of terrifying encounters that preceded the collapse. It doesn’t address the strange lights, the unnerving visits, or the impossible creature witnesses swore they saw. The official file explains how the bridge fell, but it leaves the strangeness of that final year an unsettling and unanswered question.

Modern Encounters: A New Chapter

You would think the story ends there, wouldn’t you? The bridge falls, the sightings stop, and the Mothman becomes a sad, strange chapter in a town’s history. While Point Pleasant has certainly memorialized the creature with a museum and an annual festival, the file on the Mothman didn’t close in 1967. The haunting just went quiet for a while.

Case File: Route 2, WV - November 2018

For decades after the collapse, the sightings in the Ohio River Valley became sporadic, little more than whispers in the dark. Then, in November 2018, the creature seemed to come home. A report was filed with the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) by a witness driving along Route 2, a stretch of road that runs parallel to the Ohio River, just miles from the original TNT Area.

The witness saw a massive, winged humanoid take flight and soar over the road. They took a photograph of the creature, and their description was chillingly familiar: a tall, man-like figure with enormous wings. The report suggested that whatever had terrorized the TNt Area in the 60s was still clinging to the backroads of West Virginia.

The Chicago Flap

Then, something new started happening. It began around 2011 as a trickle of strange reports, but by 2017, it had become a flood. The phenomenon was on the move. It left the quiet, rural darkness of West Virginia and seemed to set up shop in the sprawling urban environment of Chicago. A new “flap” was underway, and investigators at the Singular Fortean Society found themselves trying to make sense of dozens of new reports.

Case File: O’Hare International Airport, IL - August 2017

Some of the most compelling accounts came from one of the busiest places on the planet. It was August 2017. An air traffic controller at O’Hare was on a break outside Terminal 3 with a colleague when he saw a creature standing near a railing. It was seven feet tall. Black, “bat-like,” with glowing red eyes. As they watched, it let out a screech, spread its massive wings, and flew off into the night sky, disappearing over the airport.

Case File: Lincoln Park, IL - April 2017

The sightings weren’t just confined to the airport, either. A few months earlier, multiple witnesses near Chicago’s Lincoln Park saw it. A couple was strolling by the historic Lincoln Park Conservatory on a normal evening. That’s when they noticed something perched on the roof. A huge, pale, winged creature was watching the crowd below. After a moment, it took flight, its ten-foot wingspan casting a shadow as it vanished over the park.

You have dozens of reports, separated by fifty years and hundreds of miles. But the descriptions are all the same. The same size, the same wings, the same glowing red eyes. So you have to ask yourself: did the creature that once stalked Point Pleasant ever truly leave, or has it simply found a new territory?

An American Chimera

In the end, what’s the story of the Mothman?

It’s two stories, existing side-by-side. One is a cold, forensic report about a single, flawed piece of steel. A story of metal fatigue that ends in a tragic, physical failure.

The other is a chaotic collection of witness statements about an impossible creature and thirteen months of high strangeness that came to a dead stop the moment the bridge fell.

The official file explains the how. It has nothing to say about the when. It offers no reason for the chilling alignment of a mundane disaster with a year of terrifying omens. Maybe the truth isn’t in one story or the other. Maybe the real story is the unsettling space between them.

There are some places in this country where the shadows feel a little too deep, where the woods seem to watch you back. The New Jersey Pine Barrens is one of those places. It’s a sprawling, spooky forest of over a million acres, laced with cedar swamps and sandy trails that lead to nowhere. And for nearly 300 years, it’s been the hunting ground for one of America’s oldest and most terrifying monsters.

It often starts with the sound - a blood-curdling, unholy scream that rips through the unnerving quiet of the pines. Locals know it. Campers fear it. It’s a sound that doesn’t belong to any known animal, a shriek that raises the hairs on your arms and tells you to get back in your car and lock the doors. Because the thing that makes the sound is, according to centuries of terrified witnesses, something straight out of a nightmare. They call it the Jersey Devil.

The descriptions are the stuff of legend: a creature with the head of a horse, long, leathery bat-like wings, and two powerful legs ending in cloven hooves. It’s said to move with terrifying speed, its glowing red eyes being the last thing you see before it vanishes back into the trees. It’s been seen by thousands, from farmers and postmasters in the 18th century to modern-day drivers on a lonely stretch of the Garden State Parkway.

But what is this thing, really? Is it a flesh-and-blood cryptid, a genuine paranormal entity that has somehow survived in the shadows of the Eastern Seaboard for centuries? Or is the monster we think we know just a story, a legend whose true origins are even more bizarre and twisted than the creature itself? • Head: Most witnesses describe the head as distinctly horse-like or equine. However, some accounts differ, claiming it has a face more like a collie dog or a goat. During the famous “Phenomenal Week” in 1909, one postmaster who saw it over the Delaware River said it had a “ram-like head.”

• Wings: Nearly every account agrees on this point: the creature has large, leathery, bat-like wings that enable it to fly with startling speed. This feature is a key part of its demonic iconography.

• Body & Limbs: The Devil is a biped, standing on two powerful hind legs that are often compared to a kangaroo’s. These legs end in its most diabolical feature: cloven hooves, a trait directly associated with the Christian Devil. Its front limbs are smaller and underdeveloped, but tipped with sharp, clawed hands.

• Eyes & Tail: A persistent and frightening detail is the creature’s glowing red eyes. One of the first witnesses in the 1901 panic described them as shining like “eyes of phosphorus”. To complete the demonic profile, most legends agree it has a long, forked tail.

Abilities & Evidence

The Devil’s terrifying appearance is matched by its otherworldly abilities.

• The Scream: Perhaps its most famous characteristic is its vocalization. Witnesses consistently report a “blood-curdling,” “ungodly,” or “bone-chilling” scream that echoes for miles through the Pines. Often, this terrifying sound is the only warning you get before an encounter.

• Flight & Speed: Its primary mode of travel is flight, allowing it to appear and disappear with terrifying suddenness. On the ground, it moves with incredible speed, easily outpacing any pursuers. One witness during the 1909 panic fired at it with no effect as it flew away.

• Physical Evidence: The most common evidence left behind is its tracks. The 1909 panic was ignited by the widespread discovery of strange, cloven hoofprints in the snow. These tracks added to the mystery, as they were found in impossible places like rooftops and would often appear and disappear without explanation.

This isn’t just a random monster; it’s a creature whose every feature seems precision-engineered to violate the natural order and inspire primal fear. It’s a being that, by all accounts, should not exist. And yet, for centuries, people have sworn they’ve seen it.

A History of Fear: From Colonial Curse to Modern Encounters

The Jersey Devil didn’t just appear out of thin air. It was born. According to the foundational legend, the creature’s story begins on a dark and stormy night in the Pine Barrens in 1735. A destitute woman known as Mother Leeds, already overwhelmed with 12 children, discovered she was pregnant with a 13th. In a fit of despair, she threw her hands to the heavens and cried out for the Devil to take the child. The legend says her wish was granted. The child was born hideously deformed, a monstrous creature that unfolded its new wings, slaughtered the midwife, and escaped up the chimney to begin its reign of terror over the Pines.

For decades, the monster was a local horror story, but its reputation grew thanks to encounters with some famous men of the age.

• Commodore Stephen Decatur: The celebrated naval hero of the War of 1812 was inspecting cannonballs at the Hanover Mill Works when he allegedly spotted the creature. Without hesitating, the story goes, Decatur fired a cannonball directly at it, only to watch in disbelief as the best few away completely unharmed.

• Joseph Bonaparte: Even royalty wasn’t safe. Napoleon Bonaparte’s elder brother, Joseph, was living in exile on a lavish estate in Bordentown, NJ. Around 1820, he was hunting in the woods when he came face-to-face with the strange, hissing creature, solidifying the legend’s credibility with an aristocratic witness.

After these early encounters, the Devil was never gone for long. The legend was kept alive by sporadic but terrifying reports that surfaced throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, proving the creature was still very active. In 1960, residents of Mays Landing were gripped by fear after discovering strange tracks and hearing ungodly shrieks near the Egg Harbor River. In 1990, soldiers at Fort Dix reported a frightening encounter with the creature.

The sightings have even continued into the internet age. In 2015, a man named Dave Black was driving home from work in Galloway Township when he saw something over a golf course. The image, which he claimed was the Jersey Devil itself, instantly went viral, sparking a massive debate online. While many dismissed it, for others, it was chilling proof that the Devil is still out there.

From a cursed birth to a viral photograph, the Jersey Devil’s long and violent history has one consistent thread: fear. But all of these encounters were just a prelude to one single, terrifying week when the creature stopped hiding in the shadows and revealed itself to the entire world.

The Week the Devil Went Viral: How Mass Panic Made a Star

For nearly two centuries, the Jersey Devil was a local bogeyman, a story to scare kids and travelers. That all changed in the third week of January 1909. For seven days, the creature went on a rampage across the Delaware Valley, leaving a trail of terror, confusion, and sensational newspaper headlines in its wake. This was the “Phenomenal Week,” the moment the Jersey Devil stopped being a legend and became a terrifying reality for thousands of people.

It began on Saturday, January 16th, with sightings in Woodbury, New Jersey, and across the river in Bristol, Pennsylvania. In Bristol, Postmaster E.W. Minster saw a flying creature that looked like a “large crane” with a “ram-like head.” A patrolman named James Sackville fired his revolver at it, but the shots had no effect. The next day, things escalated. Towns across the region awoke to find strange, cloven hoofprints pressed into the snow. The tracks were found in impossible places - crisscrossing rooftops, scaling fences, and appearing and disappearing inexplicably in the middle of open fields.

By Monday, the sightings became more intimate and terrifying. Nelson Evans and his wife, of Gloucester City, claimed they watched the creature for ten minutes from their bedroom window at 2:30 AM. They described it as being “three feet and a half high, with a head like a collie dog and a face like a horse.” By Wednesday, full-blown panic was setting in. A woman in Camden chased a large creature away with a broom as it tried to eat her dog. Armed posses formed in Haddonfield and Collingswood to hunt the beast, reportedly watching it fly off toward Morrestown.

Thursday, January 21st, was the peak of the hysteria. A trolley car full of passengers in Haddon Heights was reportedly “attacked” by the creature, sending them into a panic. In West Collingswood, firefighters turned their hoses on a beast they spotted on a rooftop. The fear was so palpable that society began to break down. Numerous schools, mills, and businesses closed as terrified residents refused to leave their homes. The story was no longer local; newspapers across the country had picked up the story, transforming the creature into a household name.

The aftermath was just as significant. In a cynical attempt to capitalize on the fear, a Dime Museum in Philadelphia exhibited a kangaroo that they painted with green stripes and outfitted with fake wings, billing it as the captured monster. It was these commercial hucksters who rebranded the creature for a national audience. They dropped the old “Leeds Devil” moniker in favor of the more geographically catchy “Jersey Devil,” and the name stuck. In one wild week, a regional folktale had become a national sensation, its image and name seared into the American consciousness forever.

A Devil by Another Name: The Curse of the Leeds Family

The story of the Jersey Devil doesn’t begin with a monstrous birth, but with a man: Daniel Leeds (1651-1720). Leeds was a prominent but controversial figure in colonial New Jersey. He was a surveyor for the British Crown and the publisher of a popular almanac. His problems began when he included astrological symbols in his almanacs, an act that the powerful local Quaker community considered heretical. Combined with his unpopular political support of the British Crown, this made him a pariah.

His opponents used rhetoric as a weapon, branding him a malevolent force. One Quaker critic published a tract that explicitly linked Leeds and his work to Satan. It was here, in the ink of political and religious disputes, that the “Leeds Devil” was first conceived - not as a beast of the forest, but as a political smear against a man who defied his community.

The family’s supernatural reputation was then unintentionally cemented by one of the era’s great minds: Benjamin Franklin. Seeking to undermine his business competition, Daniel’s son, Titan Leeds, Franklin launched a satirical campaign in his own Poor Richard’s Almanack. He “predicted” the exact date of Titan’s death and, when the day passed, insisted his rival was now a ghost publishing from beyond the grave. This commercial prank further entangled the Leeds name with the occult.

The final piece of the puzzle - the creature’s bizarre appearance - fell into place in 1728. That year, Titan Leeds began printing the family crest on his almanacs. This crest featured a wyvern: a winged, two-legged, dragon-like creature. The public imagination did the rest. Over time, people fused the political “Devil” slur with the family’s heraldic imagery. The horse-like head, the bat-like wings, the serpentine body - the physical form of the Jersey Devil is, in essence, a literal interpretation of the Leeds family crest.

This political backstory then merged perfectly with a historical coincidence. Daniel’s son, Japhet, and his wife, Deborah, really did live in the area of the Pine Barrens known as Leeds Point. And, according to Japhet’s 1736 will, they had 12 children. A real family with the surname Leeds, living in Leeds Point, with 12 children in the 1730s, provided the perfect, tangible framework onto which the folkloric tale of a cursed “thirteenth child” could be grafted. The monster was never born from a curse; it was born from a political caricature that time twisted into a folktale.

The Skeptic’s Corner

The most persistent rational explanation for the Jersey Devil is perhaps the simplest: a case of mistaken identity. For years, scientists have pointed to one prime suspect living in the marshes of the Pine Barrens - the Sandhill Crane. This large bird stands up to four feet tall, has an imposing seven-foot wingspan, and emits a startling, rattling cry that could, in the dark, be perceived as something monstrous.

It’s a neat theory. And yet, does it fully satisfy the legend? Does a bird, no matter how large or loud, truly explain the chillingly specific reports of a “horse-like head” or those impossible tracks found on rooftops?

Mistaken identity, compelling as it may be for some encounters, struggles to explain the sheer scale of the “Phenomenal Week” in 1909. For that, researchers point to a different, but equally powerful, force: a perfect storm of media-fueled hysteria and cynical hoaxes. The most famous hoax is well-documented: a Philadelphia Dime Museum cynically displayed a painted kangaroo with fake wings to profit from the panic. It’s argued that the media’s sensationalist reporting on a few initial sightings created a feedback loop of fear, causing the public to interpret any strange sight or sound as the Devil.

This theory neatly explains the chaos of that one specific week. But does it address the sightings that came before it, or the hundreds that have been reported in the century since, long after the newspapers fell silent?

Taken together, the arguments are powerful. A strange bird, a clever hoax, and a classic case of public panic. It’s a version of the story where no monster is required. But for those who have studied the sheer volume of accounts spanning three centuries, the question lingers. Are these explanations enough? Or are they simply the easiest way to sleep at night, ignoring the possibility that something else-something other-truly calls the Barrens home.

Conclusion

So, where does this leave us? We’ve journeyed from a cursed birth on a stormy colonial night to the bitter political feuds of a forgotten family. We’ve seen how the ink of a newspaper can be just as powerful as any curse in creating a monster, and how a strange bird in the dark can fuel a legend for a century. The Jersey Devil, it seems, has many faces. It’s a terrifying cryptid with a chillingly specific anatomy. It’s the lingering ghost of a political smear against a man named Daniel Leeds. It’s a case study in media-fueled mass hysteria and cynical commercial hoaxes.

Each explanation is compelling, and each seems to hold a piece of the puzzle. Yet none of them, on their own, feels complete. The historical theory brilliantly explains the name and the imagery, but does it explain the modern sightings? The Sandhill Crane theory sounds plausible, but does it account for the sheer terror and consistency in eyewitness accounts over 300 years?

Perhaps the true nature of the Jersey Devil lies in the confluence of all these things. Maybe a political grudge created a story that gave a name to a strange bird, whose sightings were then amplified by the media into a full-blown panic that has simply never gone away.

The only thing certain is that deep in the sprawling, sandy woods of New Jersey, the legend lives on. The pines keep their secrets, and after all this time, the creature - whether real or imagined - endures.

Skinwalkers are believed to be malevolent witches who wield dark magic, while Crawlers are a more recent phenomenon. They are often described as pale, gaunt humanoid figures with no cultural or historical ties. Despite their distinct origins, many people categorize them under the broad label of cryptids. In this post, we’ll delve deeper into the legends of Skinwalkers and Crawlers, exploring their histories, characteristics, and cultural significance to finally set the record straight.

Crawlers: The Rise of a Modern Cryptid

What are Crawlers?

Unlike many cryptids found in ancient folklore, Crawlers are a relatively new phenomenon. These creatures are described as pale, gaunt, humanoid beings with unnaturally long limbs and large, black, hollow eyes. Their unsettling appearance and eerie reports of their movements have made Crawlers a staple in online cryptid lore. Witnesses frequently describe them as incredibly fast, able to dart across roads or through forests with unnatural agility.

A chilling eyewitness account from a rural town in Michigan in 2008 described the Crawler as “a naked figure, pale as midnight, with elongated limbs. It crawled through the grass like it was hunting.” This haunting description has been reflected in other reports from across North America, including sightings in New York, Wisconsin, and even Canada’s Northwest Territories.

Crawlers: Digital Age Cryptid or Ancient Origins?

The origins of Crawlers remain a mystery. Unlike cryptids with well-documented cultural roots, Crawlers appear to have emerged from the internet’s darker corners, with reports often shared in anonymous forums. Some cryptozoologists, however, believe that Crawlers might be connected to older myths, such as the Wendigo from Algonquin folklore. The Wendigo, often described as a gaunt, cannibalistic figure with elongated limbs, shares unsettling similarities with modern descriptions of Crawlers.

One cryptozoologist remarked, “There’s an undeniable connection between the physical descriptions of Crawlers and the ancient Wendigo legends of the Algonquin people. Both are pale, gaunt, and otherworldly, yet their origins differ dramatically.” 

Despite these potential ties to ancient myths, Crawlers have firmly established themselves as a product of modern folklore, rapidly gaining popularity thanks to the internet. Their emergence in creepypasta stories and online discussions has transformed them into a contemporary urban legend—a cryptid for the digital age. 

Unveiling Skinwalkers: A Legendary Navajo Entity

In stark contrast to Crawlers, Skinwalkers are deeply rooted in the ancient spiritual practices of the Navajo people. Known as yee naaldlooshii, meaning “with it, he goes on all fours,” Skinwalkers are witches who have chosen to use their spiritual power for evil purposes. Unlike medicine people, who use their knowledge for healing and balance, Skinwalkers represent the perversion of these sacred practices. To become a Skinwalker, one must commit an unspeakable act, such as murdering a family member, to gain their dark abilities.

One Navajo elder once said, “The Skinwalker is not just a shapeshifter; it is a person who has forsaken their community, their family, and their soul. They embody the darkest elements of Navajo witchcraft.” This quote reflects Skinwalkers’ deep moral and spiritual weight in Navajo culture.

Shapeshifting & Dark Magic

Skinwalkers can shapeshift into animals—a skill acquired through dark rituals—that sets them apart from other cryptids. Unlike Crawlers, who are fixed in their grotesque form, Skinwalkers can transform into coyotes, wolves, or bears, depending on their intent. These transformations are not merely superficial; they are believed to be complete physical shifts, allowing the Skinwalker to blend seamlessly into the natural world.

As she got closer, she realized it was kneeling on the roadside, clutching what looked like roadkill. Unlike most animals that flee, this creature stared at Lori with no fear, which she found unsettling.

Lori described it as having dark, brownish-gray fur, standing about 5’7”, and weighing roughly 150 pounds. Its behavior and posture suggested it wasn’t an ordinary animal. Intrigued, she visited the library and discovered a book on werewolves, finding an illustration that resembled the creature she saw.

This encounter became pivotal for the Beast of Bray Road legend, sparking interest and investigations. Linda Godfrey later popularized the story, using Lori’s description to create an iconic sketch that continues to intrigue those who are interested in the mysterious creature in Elkhorn, Wisconsin.

Doris Gipson

Doris Gipson, a friend of Lori Endrizzi, reported a sighting of the Beast of Bray Road on Halloween night, October 31, 1991. While driving along Bray Road, her car lurched as if she had hit something. Concerned, she stopped to check her tire but was confronted by a large creature sprinting towards her. In shock, she rushed back to her car just in time to see it lift the rear of her vehicle with extraordinary strength.

Fearing for her life, Doris sped away, believing her quick thinking saved her. Though she didn’t see the creature's lower body, she distinctly remembered its large, hairy chest and the sound of its feet on the road, which indicated that it ran on two legs.

Describing the experience as unsettling, Doris felt hunted, convinced she wouldn’t have survived if caught. Later, while picking up a friend from a Halloween party, the creature reappeared. Her friend saw it first, but Doris, recalling her earlier encounter, sped away, avoiding another scare.

Upon returning home, Doris discovered claw-like scratches on her vehicle, reinforcing her belief she had escaped a predator. In an interview with Linda Godfrey, Doris described the creature as larger and more muscular than a German Shepherd, with long, straight brown hair. She stated it wasn't a werewolf but a monstrous animal, calling it “one of God’s mistakes,” highlighting her fear.

Mark Schackelman: The Earliest Encounter

Lori Endrizzi and Doris Gipson sparked modern interest in the Beast of Bray Road, but Mark Schackelman’s encounters in 1936 marked the first known interactions. As a night watchman at St. Coletta, a Catholic convent in Jefferson, Wisconsin, Schackelman faced the creature on two consecutive nights at midnight. On the first night, he saw it on a Native American burial mound, clawing the earth before it fled. The next day, he discovered three claw-like markings on the ground.

The second night was more intense. Armed only with a flashlight, Schackelman returned to find the creature, now standing upright and staring at him. Described as six feet tall, covered in dark hair, and with piercing eyes, it emitted a low growl resembling the word “gadarrah.” Schackelman felt an aura of menace, intensified by a rotting smell, leading him to believe it could kill him. After praying, the creature sneered and retreated.

This encounter predates modern sightings and introduces supernatural aspects—such as the burial mound and the creature's growl—suggesting links to ancient folklore. Years later, Schackelman’s son, Joe, sketched the beast based on his father’s description, depicting a muscular form with three long claws and a pronounced muzzle. Mark unsettlingly claimed the creature came from hell, speculating that his prayers might have temporarily banished it.

Tom Bricheta, Chris Maxwell, & Scott Freimund

In August 1992, Tom Bricheta and Chris Maxwell encountered a large, hairy creature while driving toward Jellystone Campground after a wedding. Thinking he had hit a mailbox, Tom pulled over but found no mailbox—only the creature reaching out. The foul odor they smelled suggested an unknown beast. After dropping Chris off, Tom reported the sighting to the police, coinciding with another report of a large object along Highway 106. Nothing was found.

Later, Tom changed his account, omitting the mailbox theory, describing an enormous hand reaching through the fog, and describing a towering creature with whitish-gray fur and long arms. The creature also emitted a strong odor.

Two months later, Tom saw the creature again, this time with Scott Freimund, while driving at dusk. The creature was about 20 feet from the road, clearly visible over six-foot corn stalks. Initially unnoticed, it turned to stare menacingly at them. This time, Tom described it as having dog-like legs and dark fur, which differed from the previous sighting.

These sightings contribute to the lore of the Beast of Bray Road, highlighting consistent features like its posture while differing in details such as fur color and the number of legs observed. Varying descriptions prompt questions of whether these accounts refer to the same creature or multiple beings, shaped by fear and perception.

For instance, in the 1930s, Mark Schackelman found unusual marks near a Native American burial mound, yet no documentation or casting was done. Similarly, other sightings have failed to yield analyzable evidence. Claims of vehicle damage, especially from Doris Gipson and Tom Bricheta, who reported claw marks on their cars, also lack definitive proof.

Despite this, numerous eyewitness accounts provide valuable, though imperfect, evidence. As with any testimony, these must be scrutinized; human memory is unreliable, and misidentification is possible. Notably, some witnesses described the Beast as Sasquatch-like, while Scott Bray reported a creature resembling a large black dog.

Godfrey also spoke with Jon Frederickson, an animal control officer. Frederickson shared a manila file labeled “Werewolf,” which contained reports of strange animal sightings. While the label was somewhat joking, the file's existence indicated unusual activity in the area.

Along with photographer Terry Mayer, she conducted a night investigation using raw chicken as bait to entice the Beast. Despite spending hours waiting, the creature did not appear. Godfrey noted that sightings often occur when people are not actively searching for it.

Reports indicate that DNA testing on hair samples linked to the creature suggested it might be an unknown canid. While documentation is limited, the large dog- or wolf-like footprints support this theory. 

Investigating the Beast poses significant challenges. It is elusive, with no clear photographs or reliable evidence, and eyewitness accounts can be misleading. Funding is also scarce, hindering in-depth research.
